This first-generation car released in 2000 (2000-2009 with 2001 being the model year), was built on Volvos P2 platform that is also shared by the S80, S70, XC90, as well as other models. The S60 is a compact executive car built by the Swedish automaker to be the companys new generation sports sedan. So, is it an elegant luxury sedan or a sleek sports sedan? Well actually, its both! The midsize S60 was created to take the place of the discontinued S70, yet Volvo designed it with higher aspirations than its predecessor. Without sacrificing any of the usual Volvo trademarks such as safety and upscale features, Volvo wanted the S60 to be a sporty car, a car that would appeal to someone who likes to drive. To do this, Volvo started by reducing the P2 platforms dimensions to give the S60 more nimble handling. In comparison to the previous S70, the S60 is 5.7 inches shorter, as a 2-inch shorter wheelbase, and has wider wheel tracks both front and rear. The exterior also received some changes in order to make the car look sportier.
