About

AM General is a heavy-vehicle manufacturer known for the military Humvee and the subsequent Hummer brand. The brand came into existence in 1967 when American Motors purchased Kaiser-Jeep and became AM General. In the 1970s the company produced military vehicles, busses, and large trucks. The company developed the High Mobility Multipurpose Wheeled Vehicle (referred to as HMMWV, or Humvee) in the late 1970s. In 1982 Renault bought the brand. AM General sold the rights to the Hummer brand to General Motors in 1999.
