ith summer approaching you'll see plenty of lists of "best convertibles for the summer" or "best of all time" or "best ones for a certain budget." These lists ignore the fact that there have been plenty of duds over time. We take a look at ten of the worst convertibles to ever grace the market.
Plymouth ProwlerPlymouth Prowler: We admit the Prowler looked kinda cool, but it never had true hot-rod panache. Yes, the car's light weight kept the V-6 and automatic transmission from being overwhelmed and gave the car respectable performance numbers, but we still lament the lack of a torquey V-8 and a manual gearbox. It's not so much that the Prowler was a bad car so much as it could've been so, so much better than it was. |
2002 Ford Thunderbird Ford Thunderbird (2002-2005): This is another example of a half-assed execution. Initially well-received by the media, the car's sales eventually slumped as the automotive press turned on the car. It's a looker that pays homage to the original T-Bird, and the V-8 power was appreciated, but the lack of a true performance model (along with the lack of a manual tranny) and a poor marketing job by Ford doomed the car to status as a mid-life crisis car. That's too bad, because had the car been just a little bit better, it might've been a bigger hit. |
2012 Nissan Murano CrossCabriolet Nissan Murano CrossCabriolet: We just don't get it. Why in the world does anyone need a topless Murano? Not to mention that this vehicle is just plain unattractive. There's not much more to say, other than we hope Nissan sticks to building hardtops only, at least when it comes to the Murano. |
1999 Pontiac Sunfire Convertible Pontiac Sunfire Convertible: It's a Sunfire. Enough said. Seriously, if you require further explanation, you were living under a rock between 1995 and 2005. |
Chrysler LeBaron ConvertibleChrysler LeBaron Convertible (1982-1985): We don't dislike the later LeBaron convertibles, but the first generation, complete with available faux wood exteriors, isn't exactly attractive. Perhaps the most memorable thing about this car is that one of them served as Jon Voight's car in Seinfeld. |
1990 Cadillac Allante Cadillac Allante: A front-wheel-drive luxury convertible? Yeah, not a good idea, Cadillac. No wonder this car didn't sell well. |
2000 Chevrolet Cavalier Convertible Chevrolet Cavalier Convertible: While it's true that a convertible Cavalier was affordable for the masses, it wasn't particularly memorable. And when it is remembered, it's rarely remembered fondly. |
|
1998 Tracker Geo/Chevy Tracker and Suzuki Samurai: This Jeep Wrangler-wannabe never really registered on the "cool" spectrum, even in its heyday. For that, we can be thankful. |
Chrysler Sebring ConvertibleChrysler Sebring Convertible: It's a Sebring, so its reputation precedes it. That hasn't stopped it from being a popular rental choice in Florida. |
Smart ForTwo Cabrio Smart ForTwo Cabrio: Taking the top off of a bad car does NOT make it better. Nice try, though. |
