exas and Utah already have roads with 80-mile-per-hour speed limits, but now the Lone Star State might claim the title for having the nation's highest speed limit on a new toll road being built between San Antonio and Austin, with a limit of 85 mph.

Highway 130 is currently being tested to see if it can handle the speed. Only roads built to the highest standards are eligible for speed limits that high.

speed limits Texas may have an 85 mile per hour speed limit soon.

The road will run parallel to Interstate 35, so it's possible that a higher speed limit and lower traffic volumes might appeal to motorists, even if they have to pay to use the road. Parts of the road are already built with an 80-mph speed limit.

It will be interesting to see if the road passes the tests needed to certify the 85-mph speed limit—and to see if Texas motorists can handle the increased velocity without increased carnage.
