lthough voice recognition has been available in more than a few models for a while now, Apple is planning to bring Siri to cars built by select manufacturers, according to an announcement at the World Wide Developers Conference.

Apple is also promising turn-by-turn navigation and crowd-sourced traffic information.

Obviously, iPhone users can already access Siri through their phones while driving, and in most cars with Bluetooth connections, when Siri is activated and the phone is paired, the driver can talk to Siri through the voice recognition system. Now, however, drivers will be able to press a button on the steering wheel or dashboard to access Siri. In theory, this should allow drivers to keep their eyes on the road instead of fumbling around for their phone.

Apple will be working with GM, Land Rover, Jaguar, BMW, Mercedes-Benz, Chrysler, Audi, Toyota, and Honda on the system, and at least one of the manufacturers will offer Siri integration within a year.

Apple is also promising turn-by-turn navigation and crowd-sourced traffic information.

Does this mean that a year from now, there will be bad commercials featuring A-list celebrities asking Siri mundane questions while driving? We hope so for comedy's sake.
