Chrysler is an American automaker founded by Walter Chrysler, who created it out of the ashes of the Maxwell-Chalmers company in 1925. By 1936 Chrysler had become the number-two automaker in the country. In 1928 Chrysler introduced the Plymouth and DeSoto brands and purchased Dodge. Chrysler ran into financial trouble in 2009 and accepted $6 billion in government support to aid in its restructuring, which involved forming an alliance with Italian automaker Fiat.
