Some tips on what to do prior to buying a used car

Houston City has a large selection of used cars to buy and most of them are worth much more than what you pay for them at the used car auctions, however, there are a few precautions you should take before you buy one of them. Buying used cars is financially beneficial but this does not mean that you do not check on the vehicles or inspect them prior to buying them. Most car dealers and auctioneers permit the inspection of the vehicles on the spot and you could do this to play it safe. Everyone is not technically sound in checking out vehicles so you could take along a mechanic or someone who knows about the technicalities. The interiors, exteriors and the engine should be checked out thoroughly so that you can gauge the extent of repairs which are required and what this would cost you. Remember that the cost of repairs should be added to the price of the vehicle because this is what you would have to spend on the car once you buy it to make it road worthy.

Raymundo, lets go over this by looking at one thing at a time ....

"she asked for divorce and want to keep and make the payments of the car that is under both our names" - I hope you are fully aware that if the she stops making payments on this car you will be responsible for the payments. What we see happen is that one person stops making the payments and the second person does not know about it until it is too late and your credit is damaged.

"Is there any way to be able to have the title changed after I pay off.. or even better .. is there any way to change the loan towards me..?" - It is not clear from your post if the title or just the loan is under both of your names. If the title for the car is under both names she would have to transfer the title completely to you. However, you can not do this until the loan is paid in full and you have the title from the lender. If you can not pay off the loan you need to REFINANCE the existing loan. Basically this is equivalent to getting a new loan to pay off the existing loan. As part of this process you need to make sure that she is not on the title of the car you are going to keep.

Our advice is to refinance both loans if you can. And make sure that you are only responsible for your own actions. Unfortunately, divorce is one of the most common way to ruin your credit.

We as a family bought 2 cars.. but...

Car1: Is under her name
car2: is under both our names

The thing is that she asked for divorce and want to keep andmake the payments of the car that is under both our names. And she wants me to keep paying Car 1 under her name.. Is there any way to be able to have the title changed after I pay off.. or even better .. is there any way to change the loan towards me..? I thought that the easy way is to have a loan to payoff theloan completely under her name and start paying under my name... is this a possibility??? thanks for any answer

Hi AlaskaBoy,

Your situation is not simple. There are just too many variables at play to provide any concrete answers to you fundamental questions of “What I need to know is where I can get a car loan with an open ch 13? Do you have sources? More specifically, sources that won't gouge me 24%”. Each state has different laws and lenders have to be licensed in each state to provide the loans. As a result your location plays a big part in the type of loan you can and can not get as well as your interest rate.

At the end of the day a lender needs to manage the risk and the only way to do this on a macro scale is to look at patterns. Unfortunately you fall into the ch 13 bucket and this will be a big red flag. And while it is clear that you are a “good person in a bad situation” the risk management formula will probably not put you into a low risk category (i.e. you will probably have a high interest rate).

Some good news, the fact that you have made your car loan payments on time is a big plus. Car Loan Lenders look at this very carefully and it does play an important part in the decision.

Many Kia dealers have the ability to work with folks that have bad credit. Have you tried contacting your local Kia dealer(s)? With the current market conditions they just might be very happy to work with you.

First, I am completely skeptical of "bad credit" loan places so making me feel comfortable is the first job.

My question revolves around finding an auto loan for those who are in an open chapter 13 situation. Before our business failure I had absolutely perfect credit and several times just called the dealer, told them what I wanted and tomorrow I had it - delivered. Then we had our tough times and closed the business.

I'm currently about 27 months into our five year ch 13 plan. We had two car loans (taken out just before the ch 13 though Credit Acceptance after our previous leases were up) that we have paid off earlier this year, each with perfect records of on-time payments. Our mortgage payments have been virtually perfect during our ch 13 time. We have no other outstanding debts and our payments to the trustee have been perfect.

Our plan payments were negotiated to accommodate the car loans ending, then being replaced. If not replaced our trustee payment would go up $300/mo which it did in July. I mention that to say that the trustee, I'm told by my attorney, would almost certainly reduce our payment back to where it was.

What I need to know is where I can get a car loan with an open ch 13? Do you have sources? More specifically, sources that won't gouge me 24%.

Also, does down payment matter? Currently, just $500 and a $1000 trade. Come December, $1500-2000 and same trade.

Thoughts?

We are definitely one of those "good people with bad circumstances". I'm not looking for Cadillacs, I'm looking for something like a good-mileage new Kia. My tastes aren't extravagant, never have been. I just am trying to stop paying high mileage, used car repair bills every month. It's already one or two car payments every month, I may as well be driving something better.

Thanks.

Jenny,

This is a great questions. Thanks for posting it here.
A Buy Here Pay Here dealer is a dealership that can provide financing directly to the consumer. They focus less on your credit score and more on your credit worthiness the questions they are concerned with are:
Are you a good person in a bad situation
How long have you lived in your home/apartment
Have you worked with the same company for more than a year

If you can't get a car loan from a bank there is absolutely no reason not use a Buy Here Pay Here dealer. In many cases this is the first step towards improving your credit.

The BHPH dealer will focus on your ability to make payments on weekly or bi-weekly manner. You can read more in an article in our Knowledgebase section about Buy Here Pay Here Dealer.

I second the idea of the home equity line of credit. The tax deduction definitely helps. It is always a good idea to explore ways to improve your credit. You can do things like challenge negative reportings on your credit file. If the source doesn't rebutt your challenge within a certain amount of time it will be taken off.

Pam,

We did some research on this. Clearly we are not a legal expert so do take this at face value.

It appears that it is OK for a dealer to request a limited power of attorney.

From DMV site:
"A general or "limited" power of attorney can be used to authorize another person to act on the grantor's behalf to complete, sign and/or pick-up motor vehicle title and/or tag documents. These powers of attorney cannot be used by the owner(s) to appoint the purchaser(s)/transferee(s) of their vehicle as their attorney-in-fact when the vehicle requires an odometer declaration on an acceptable secure document."

If anyone has more information on this topic please chime in.

Pam,

Even with a score in the low 400's you have options. You might be in the mid to upper 400's so your options might be better than I describe. In particular you might not have to pay a premium for the car and you should get a better interest rate.

Today many dealerships have the necessary financial relationships to get you into a car. Clearly you will not have the best interest rate (so be prepared for this). You will also probably end up paying a premium for the car (this helps the dealership and the lender lower their risk and exposure). I should point out that our Car Loan services cover this situation and you should be able to find a dealership/lender simply by completing our car loan application.

Your second option is to work with a Buy Here Pay Here dealership. This is basically a dealership that sells cars on payment bases and less focus is put on the price of the car.

When you submit an application with Web2Carz.com we do several things. We send you a "Thank You" email and we search our network to find a lender or a dealer who is able to provide you with financing for a car in your area.

After we match your application with a member of our network we securely transmit your application details to the lender/dealer and send a second email to you notifying you that your application was accepted. Please note that accepted application is not an approved loan application.

After you application is received (accepted) by a member of our network you will be contacted by them within 3 business days to discuss your loan/vehicle options and to verify your personal information. In rare instances you might not be contacted and this means that after considering your credit score, income and payments the lender decided that they can not provide you with a loan.

You can find more details about our services and bad credit car loans in general by visiting our FAQ pages and the Tips pages.

Selecting a car loan is very rejoicing and also be cautious. The financier who is giving the loan should be selected very carefully. If you are deciding to go for an online auto loan financier, you have to do few visits about the reputed car loan lenders. Most of the lenders have calculators which will be helpful to calculate interest costs and monthly installments.

I have been virtually decline everywhere to try and refiance my current vehicle, even places that accepts bad credit. One major factor that is preventing me from getting a car loan for $10,000 is that Im held to a restriction of mileage...like with RoanLoans the restriction is 80,000 miles...They said had it not been for that I was over mileage they would have approved me. Is there a company that finances at less than 100,000 miles with extremely bad credit??? I found one company, but they want to charge me an aquistion fee of $1250 just to finance $10,000, which wouldnt even go towards the principle and now I feel this is pretty much my last choice of options.

The most common sources of getting loans are through their bank, credit union, or other institutions. These sources usually allow you to have the loan pr-approved before you step into the show room. If this is the case it helps you know your reasonable limits before you start to negotiate. If you own a home, your bank may allow you to take out a home equity loan. This will allow you to tap into your equity that you have in your home. The interest rates are lower and your payments may be tax deductible. The obvious risk to this is the risk of potentially losing your house if you default on your loan. Make sure you don't place yourself in a position of unnecessary risk.

Hi Cherry,

This is Web2Carz Forum Moderator, I think your question is very good and many of our site users could benefit from the answer.

Web2Carz.com, LTD is not a lender or a finance organization. We developed a National Network of lenders and dealerships with special financing programs to assist our customers in obtaining the financing they need to get a car.

The goal of our program is to get you into a car and we assume that you will be able to find a car you like form the inventory of the dealership that contacted you and willing to finance you.

The important thing to remember is that everyone has a different Credit Profile and many of our customers can only get a car by using our Bad Credit Car Loan service.

If your credit profile permits it, you can try using our Used Car Search service and find a Ford Escape near you. You should contact the seller by using our Contact Seller form and when the seller contacts you make sure to discuss your credit situation with them. You might have to contact several dealerships, but if your credit is not completely bad you should be able to find a dealership that has a Ford Escape and can provide the financing for you.

Sincerely,
Web2Carz.com Team

How did your web2carz loan go.

I was wondering when a dealer contacts you, is it possible for them to find the car you'd like.
