AM General introduced a civilian version of the military Humvee (High Mobility Multipurpose Wheeled Vehicle) with the M998 Humvee, equipped with similar mechanical components and boasting the same structure of its predecessor. Then in 1998 General Motors bought the brand name and released the Hummer H1, based on the Humvee and followed up with the H2 and H3.
