ast Sunday's episode of Mad Men dealt with the company's attaining Jaguar as a new client. Since the partners at the firm realized how big of a deal it is for the company to get a car account, they did everything (literally everything, and no one really thanked Joan for it) in their power to win the Jaguar execs over, and while they won out onscreen, in real life, Jaguar wasn't too pleased.
It's fair that Jaguar didn't love the episode, as it involved Joan Harris sleeping with a Jaguar exec in order to win his vote for SCDP.
The company tweeted, "Loved the pitch, didn't love the process. We applaud Peggy leaving SCDP." Okay, spoiler alert aside, it's fair that they didn't love the process—it included Joan Harris sleeping with one of Jaguar's executives to win his vote to go with SCDP over any other agency. That makes the company look pretty sleazy, and it's understandable they'd want to distance themselves from it. But come on, it's fiction, right?
As far as their reference to Peggy, she decided to leave SCDP after being offered a lot of money from another company ($19,000 a year, which equates to roughly $131,000 a year in today's economy—who knew copywriters were paid so handsomely!), and her decision to leave was only validated when she learned that by sleeping with the Jaguar exec, Joan earned a 5% stake in the company. Jaguar's applause for her leaving makes sense as well, since it illustrates that Peggy also doesn't want to associate with sleazy business practices.
