utumn is upon us, which means two things: it’s time to start assembling your Halloween costume (we’re going as The 47%, in case you wondered), and it’s time to start your Christmas shopping, because it’s never too soon to start spending money on pieces of plastic manufactured in China. And speaking of shopping, here is this week’s crop of new music releases. They make the perfect stocking stuffers, unless you download them, in which case they’re not really good for stuffing anything.

John Cale / Shifty Adventures in Nookie Wood (Double Six) THEY SAY: First studio album since 2005 for singer/songwriter and former Velvet Underground viola player John Cale. WE SAY: John Cale has had a remarkable career, from his years with Lou Reed’s Velvet Underground, to his groundbreaking solo albums in the 1970s and his various film scores. This album finds Cale still experimenting with new sounds. Even at the ripe old age of 70, he still has new tricks up his sleeve. |

Dion / The Complete Laurie Singles (Real Gone Music) THEY SAY: Collection of ‘60s and ‘70s single recordings by oldies stalwart Dion DiMucci. WE SAY: This 2-disc collection covers Dion’s post-Belmonts solo work, which is less well known than his early hits, but is no less satisfying. Of particular interest is the second disc, which covers his post 1968 output, which was vastly different from the doo-wop inspired hits of his earlier records. “Daddy Rollin’ In Your Arms,” a song that shares more in common with “White Light/White Heat” than “A Teenager In Love” is a standout. |

Moon Duo / Circles (Sacred Bones) THEY SAY: Second album from side project of Wooden Shjips guitarist Ripley Johnson. WE SAY: Another near-perfect slab of fuzzed-out psychedelic space rock from this San Francisco duo. |

Sex Pistols / Never Mind the Bollocks (Deluxe Edition) (Universal) THEY SAY: 35th anniversary edition of the Sex Pistols one and only true studio album. WE SAY: It would be easy to criticize the endless commercialization of the Sex Pistols’ musical legacy if it wasn’t for the fact that the Sex Pistols were always first and foremost a commercial proposition. For hardcore Pistols fans, there’s not much new here, even in the four-disc-plus-DVD Super Deluxe Edition, but in case there’s anyone left on Earth who hasn’t heard this legendary band, this reissue is a fine introduction. |

Various Artists / Who Are You: An All-Star Tribute To The Who (Cleopatra) THEY SAY: Numerous bands cover various songs by The Who. WE SAY: Yes, we know. Tribute records are always a very mixed bag. But this one has a few intriguing cuts: The Raveonettes take on “The Kids Are Alright,” Terry Reid’s version of “Pinball Wizard,” and Sweet taking a turn at “Won’t Get Fooled Again.” Others are far less promising, for instance “Eminence Front,” featuring members of Asia, Dream Theatre, and Judas Priest, and “Magic Bus” performed by former Herman’s Hermit Peter Noone. |
