David Beckham: British Elle's First Male Cover Star

t's not often that men grace the cover of Elle magazine. In fact, it doesn't happen. This month, soccer star and perpetual underwear model David Beckham graces the cover of British Elle, making this month the magazine's first ever male-covered issue.

"Who doesn't want to see a picture of one of the world's most handsome men on the front cover of a magazine? -- Lorraine Candy, Elle director.

Thankfully, ladies can enjoy not one but two covers, too. The inside of the cover features a photo with Beckham posing—how else—shirtless.

Elle director Lorraine Candy said of the shoot, "David Beckham is a national hero. He is an icon and Elle is known for featuring icons on its cover. This is a first for us on the newsstand and I believe he is loved by men and women alike. Anyway, who doesn't want to see a picture of one of the world's most handsome men on the front cover of a magazine?"

It's a fair question.

"It will be a collector's issue," she said.

This month's Elle hits newsstands on May 30 and also features an in-depth interview with Beckham. We wonder if it will open the doors for other male-dominated covers.
