I
n a move sure to infuriate iPhone enthusiasts who’ve spent hundreds of dollars buying power cords, USB connectors, docking stations, and various other accoutrements for their phones, Apple is believed to be changing the connector on the next generation iPhone.
If you believe the Apple rumor mill, Apple is ditching the 30-pin connector used on all current iPhones and iPods for a new 19-pin connector. According to Tech Crunch, the new port is intended to help save space inside the phone.
Apple has yet to comment on the specs for the iPhone 5, but Tech Crunch claims that various manufacturers have confirmed that Apple is indeed switching to the 19-pin port. This will cause quite an upheaval in the iPhone accessory market, as they will have to rush to make products that comply with the new port.
Further rumors indicate that the new power connectors will have chips on them that will make it impossible for companies to produce unlicensed third-party accessories. The new cable will also connect magnetically, just like the power cables on the MacBooks.
We’ll have to wait and see how many of these rumors turn out to be true, but in the meantime rumors will continue to fly.
