s we near closer to All Hallows' Eve, we might expect to see some scarier apps hitting the charts. This week, just one made the top list of paid apps, but maybe we'll start to see more. A pumpkin-carving app, perhaps? A trick-or-treating game? Developers, you've been challenged. Here's this week's most-downloaded apps, as well as a couple of our faves.

p Paid Apps.

Paid Apps
Bad Piggies remains on top this week, coming in at first place. WhatsApp Messenger is in second place, and last week's popular game Slender-Man managed to stay on the top five, this time coming in third place. Topia World Builder and Crazy Taxi are fourth and fifth, respectively. Topia is a game that lets you build worlds, while Taxi is a game wherein the goal is making the most money.

Free Apps.

Free Apps
The free apps remain mostly the same thanks to iOS updates removing YouTube access, but this week even the one fun game, Hungry Hungry (as in, Hungry Hungry Hippos) is gone. Now, there's simply YouTube in first place, Podcasts in second, and Find My Friends in third. iTunes U is in fourth, and Find My iPhone remains in fifth. Borrrrrring...

Crosswords.

Our Favorites
Crosswords—this app is free, but after a free trial you're required to pay for a subscription, since the crosswords are from the New York Times. The subscriptions are offered in one-month, six-month, or full-year options, and are $2.99, $9.99, and $16.99 respectively. If you're a crossword addict, this is a must-have.

FoodSpotting.

FoodSpotting—This free app is great if you're curious about the restaurants near your home. With this, diners take photos of the food they order (something they probably already do for Instagram) then upload the photos to the app. The photos get mapped and categorized, and then people who browse the app can comment or rate the photos. It's great for places you've curious about but haven't heard much about—this will let you know in an instant if the place looks good.
