t looks like Bose has some serious competition in the noise-cancelling headphone department. Audio-Technica recently unveiled its new ATH-ANC9 noise-cancelling headphones, and they look like they upstage Bose’s market-leading QuietComfort in several ways.

The coolest feature is the Tri-Level cancellation modes, which let you select the level of noise cancelling you need. Level 1 offers the most noise cancelling, making it good for airplanes, trains, or other commuter situations. Level 2 is suggested for offices or coffee shops; places that have some noise, but mostly in the midrange frequencies. Level 3 is meant for quieter surroundings, like when you probably don’t need noise cancelling at all.

The ATH-ANC9s also feature an inline microphone/controller so you can answer calls and make noise while cancelling out other peoples’ noise.

Like the Bose QuietComforts, the Audio-Technicas fold flat and come in a travel-ready case. They retail for $349.95.

Given Audio-Technicas reputation for superior quality headphones, sound quality should be first-rate; the ATH-ANC9s have a sensitivity of 100db, and at the highest setting, they promise to eliminate 95% of noise.
