ver since Chick-Fil-A’s CEO Dan Cathy publically stated his company’s opposition to gay marriage, the fast-food franchise has received a flurry of complaints from lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) advocates and supporters. And now, they’ve lost the support of America’s favorite furry friends, the Muppets.
The Henson Company had been partnered with Chick-Fil-A to offer “Jim Henson’s Creature Shop" toys (basically a make-your-own-Muppet kid) with its kids' meals, but they will no longer be doing so.
This is the statement released by the Jim Henson Company:
“The Jim Henson Company has celebrated and embraced diversity and inclusiveness for over fifty years and we have notified Chick-Fil-A that we do not wish to partner with them on any future endeavors. Lisa Henson, our CEO is personally a strong supporter of gay marriage and has directed us to donate the payment we received from Chick-Fil-A to GLAAD.”
In addition to the Muppets, others speaking out in opposition to Chick-Fil-A’s anti-gay stance include Boston Mayor Thomas Menino, who has stated he won’t allow Chick-Fil-A to open a franchise in his city, and Ed Helms, star of The Office who tweeted that the restaurant had “lost a loyal fan.”
Other cities, including San Franciso and Mountain View, California, have stated they will try to stop the chicken restaurant from opening franchises.
