In the market for a new vehicle this year? If you’re having trouble deciding what to buy, perhaps seeing what the masses are flocking to so far this year will help. Car and Driver released a list of the top-selling SUVs, trucks, and cars from January through March of 2019. We'll take a deeper dive into the top 5 vehicles with the highest number of units sold. While you may not get the most unique vehicle on the road with these options, you will score some excellent features and benefits. See which one of these popular models is right for you.
1. Ford F-Series
Ford sold 214,611 units of its popular F-Series truck in the first quarter of 2019. Despite some dated elements, the Ford F-Series is still leading its competitors in sales. We tested the top Limited trim of the 2019 Ford F-150 and found that all the improvements Ford has made without fully redesigning this truck have paid off. The truck is excellent to drive with impressive acceleration for something of this size, a ride that has a good balance of compliant and firm and solid handling. In addition to being fun to drive, the F-150 can also get the job done with a towing capacity of 8,000 pounds and a payload capacity of 2,309 pounds. We can see why this truck has been selling like hotcakes so far this year.
2. Ram 1500
Sales of the Ram 1500 have picked up stream to surpass the Chevy Silverado which previously held the number two spot behind the Ford F-Series. We can't blame the 120,025 buyers who went with the Ram 1500 in 2019. With a redesign for the current model year, Fiat Chrysler made the Ram 1500 more rugged and efficient. Updated suspension and lighter ladder frame chassis give this truck a smooth ride that helps absorb bumps. An optional 5.7-HEMI V8 gives you enough power to accelerate quickly, tow up to 12,750 pounds and haul up to 2,300 pounds.
3. Chevrolet Silverado
In the first part of the year, Chevy sold 114,313 units of the Silverado, which is a significant drop from the previous year of nearly 16%. This is surprising because Chevy has been hard at work redesigning the Silverado for 2019. The improvements made are noticeable including an increase in the size of the truck which now offers more interior and cargo space. The Silverado 1500 offers a maximum towing capacity of 9,990 pounds and a payload capacity of 2,543 pounds. Engine options are plentiful with a 4.3-liter V6 for 285 hp, two different types of a 5.3-liter V8 both making 355 hp, a 6.2-liter V8 that makes 420 hp and a 2.7-liter turbocharged four-cylinder that makes 310 hp, plus a 3.0-liter inline six-cylinder turbodiesel. Take your pick!
4. Nissan Rogue/Nissan Rogue Sport
Leading the SUV pack in both affordability and sales numbers is the Nissan Rogue/Nissan Rogue Sport. At $22,340 starting MSRP, we're not surprised that the Nissan Rogue is the top-selling SUV and the 4th best selling vehicle so far this year. In addition to the reasonable price, the Nissan Rogue has plenty to offer the sport utility vehicle shopper. Its ride is smooth and relaxed which is ideal for the daily commuter. The active adventurer or family will love the vast cargo area of up to 70 cubic feet with the seats down in the Rogue and 61.1 cubic feet in the Rogue Sport. The budget-conscious shopper will also appreciate the competitive fuel economy numbers of 26 city / 33 highway.
5. Chevrolet Equinox
Chevrolet grabs another spot in the top 5 best sellers list with the family-friendly Equinox crossover. In the first 3 months of 2019, Chevy sold 88,500 units of the Equinox which is a healthy increase of 7.4%. After a complete redesign in 2018, the Equinox is flying off the dealership floors thanks to an all-new platform, stylish exterior and powerful engine options. The exterior offers more drama than the model ever had before with sharp lines and an aggressive front fascia. Inside the cabin, there are even more features to like including comfortable seats, a well laid out dash and infotainment and 63.5 cubic feet of cargo space with the rear seats folded.
