Chevrolet’s Corvette Z06 is America’s supercar. It’s wickedly fast, sexy as all get out and surprisingly simple compared to the other technical monstrosities two times or more as expensive. It’s a brash but sleek take on the already popular sports car. When most people think of the Z06, they think of the 6.2-liter 650 hp rocket that’s currently in the lineup, or the C5 Z06 that graced us with its presence in 2000 for the 2001 model year, but the first Z06 actually goes all the way back to the C2 and the man behind the machine, Zora Arkus-Duntov.
The original Z06 come with more powerful brakes, stiffer suspension, and a bigger gas tank. While it was no doubt a better car that the regular Corvette, Chevy place quite a premium on the
Ready to Upstage More Expensive Cars
In its resurgence, the C5 Z06 was an absolute monster of a sports car. It had a 5.7-liter V8 that pumped out 385 hp and 358 lb-ft of torque. This allowed it to shoot from 0-60 in 4.3 seconds and make the quarter-mile in 12.7 seconds. This Corvette – with some minor modifications – broke 8 minutes on the Nürburgring Nordschleife in 2004, solidifying it as a performance car icon.
As the Corvette moved on to later years and generations, the Z06 only became more and more powerful and fast. Today, the Z06 features a supercharged 6.2-liter V8 that blasts out 650 hp and 650 lb-ft of torque. While many cars that are this powerful cost well above $100K, Chevrolet has managed to keep the cost of the Z06 to an almost astonishing $79,400. That’s a bit more than the Average Joe can fork over, but it’s an attainable number for many track drivers and amateur car collectors.
The Corvette Z06 is the Best Supercar for the Money
If you look at the other options out there, there really isn’t another car that can pull the kinds of performance numbers for the price. A 0-60 time of 2.95 seconds just isn’t achievable by other cars for a mere $80k. That’s the lovely thing about this car: It’s the affordable supercar, the everyman’s supercar. It’s a big, brash V8-sized middle finger to all the technological monster supercars out there. The only other American car out there that is comparable to the Z06 was the Dodge Viper ACR and it was significantly more expensive and breathing its last breath. If you want a modern American supercar legend, the Corvette Z06 is your car.
