The Chevy Equinox made its debut in 2005, and it’s now in its third generation. Always a basic family crossover, the Equinox changed considerably over the years. Chevrolet has sold millions of Equinoxes to busy American families. The model has always done a good job of meeting their needs. The 2018 Equinox does the family crossover better than most other vehicles on the road and better than the previous generation Equinoxes ever could. Here are five reasons why you should consider it for your next vehicle purchase.

1. It Has an All-New Platform

The designers at Chevrolet started with an all-new platform for the Equinox.

Chevrolet knew it was time for a new Equinox. The second-generation vehicle satisfied customers for eight years with updates along the way. The new Equinox had to mature with the ever-evolving crossover segment, and Chevrolet started with a blank slate to build the best CUV it could. This all starts with the new platform.

The new for 2018 framework and chassis make the model drive better than before and helped Chevrolet design a vehicle that’s 400 lbs lighter than the previous model. This further improves drivability, safety, and fuel efficiency.

2. The Exterior Looks Better Than Ever

The more aggressive front end and character lines down the side make the Equinox stand out.

The Chevrolet Equinox was never a sexy vehicle. The first generation was non-polarizing and unexciting. The second generation carried over some similar styling elements, but it looked a little bloated compared to the first generation. In contrast to its previous years, the third-generation Equinox brings some drama to the family crossover.

The 2018 model’s sharp body lines and more aggressive front fascia give the model the excitement it lacked. The new Equinox now easily competes in the styling department with other crossovers like the Honda CR-V, Toyota RAV4, and Ford Escape.

3. It Has One of the Best Chevrolet Interiors

The higher-quality materials in the interior of the Equinox take things up a notch.

We’re not always huge fans of Chevrolet’s interiors. GM’s interiors in general across several brands often look or feel cheaper than they should be, but the Equinox is different. Its cabin is well-laid-out and attractive. The dash and center console aren’t too busy, and in a two-tone color scheme, like in the image shown above, the cabin looks very upscale.

Chevrolet usually does a good job with seats, and the Equinox is no exception. There’s plenty of room, and the seats themselves offer good support, bolstering, and adjustment, which is important for a vehicle used to cart around the whole family. The rear seats fold flat, too, which means loading and unloading larger objects in and out of the 63.5 cubic foot cargo area (with rear seats folded) is not a problem at all.

4. The New Engines are Powerful and Efficient

With the diesel sitting behind that grille, the Equinox can get up to 39 mpg.

Chevy’s innovations for the model continue under the hood. Chevrolet dropped its previous model’s V6 engine. For 2018, the engine lineup starts with a 1.5-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine that makes 170 hp and 203 lb-ft of torque all while managing up to 26 mpg city and 32 mpg highway. The next step up is a 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine that makes 252 hp and 260 lb-ft of torque. That engine not only gets 24 mpg city and 30 mpg highway, but it can tow up to 3,500 lbs.

The big news for the Equinox in terms of engines is the 1.6-liter turbodiesel four-cylinder that makes 137 hp and 240 lb-ft of torque. It also manages 28 mpg city and a whopping 39 mpg on the highway, which is excellent for a crossover in this segment. For contrast, Toyota’s RAV4 Hybrid only manages 34 mpg city and 30 mpg highway. Also, important to note is that no matter the engine, the Chevy Equinox can be had with front or all-wheel drive.

5. There’s a Long List of Safety and Infotainment Tech

The Teen Driver feature allows parents to see valuable driver report card information.

Chevrolet does a good job in general of offering high-quality technology and the latest and greatest features. The 2018 Equinox follows suit coming equipped with either a 7 or 8-inch touchscreen Chevy MyLink infotainment system with features like 4G LTE Wi-Fi, MyChevrolet app, Android Auto, Apple CarPlay, and Bluetooth.

On the safety front, Chevy gives the Equinox Low-Speed Automatic Braking, Lane Departure Warning with Lane Keep Assist, Forward Collision Warning, a 360-degree camera, Intelligent High Beams, Safety Alert Seat, and Rear Seat Reminder that tells you when something is in the back seat. The Equinox also has Chevy’s Teen Driver setting that keeps track of how a teen uses the vehicle and turns off distracting features like the audio system.

All of the Equinox's features are easy to use thanks to its large touchscreen.

All things considered, the Chevrolet Equinox is one of the best vehicles in its segment. It’s such a well-rounded machine that it appeals to a wide variety of shoppers. This spells success for Chevrolet, but it also means that if you buy one, you can be sure the vehicle is up for the demands of your busy life.
