Infiniti has some great vehicles, but by and large, the brand’s cars are a little bit behind the competition in many ways. That may be changing if Infiniti plans to use its new concept car called the Q Inspiration as its basis for the future. The automaker plans to bring the new concept car to the 2018 North American International Auto Show in Detroit.
While details on the new model are scarce, it has the form of a large flagship sedan with a coupe-like roofline. Infiniti hasn’t let slip what kind of powertrain will be under the hood of the car, but we’d venture a guess that it’ll be some version of the company’s new variable compression engine that is set to come out in the 2019 QX50. We also wouldn’t be shocked to hear of some kind of electric hybrid mill purring beneath its hood.
No matter what powers this large sedan, we’re thrilled to see Infiniti doing something truly unique and genuinely cool. The last truly good large sedan from the company was the original Q45 (shown below). It wasn’t just the best Infiniti sedan to ever come out but the best overall Infiniti product in many people’s minds. It featured a powerful V8, four-wheel steering, rear wheel drive, a classy but simple cabin, and an awesome exterior.
The Q Inspiration could bring Infiniti back to the promised land of super-cool large flagship sedans. It’s also supposed to usher in a new “form” for the entire brand, according to Karim Habib, Infiniti’s Executive Design Director. We take this to mean that it will guide the styling and design for the automaker’s future cars.
If that’s true, we’re pretty happy about it. The Q Inspiration is a sleek looking car with smooth lines and one continuous light bar across the back. Photos are a little scarce at the moment but there will be more to come at NAIAS.
