Not that long ago, the Hyundai Elantra was just an economy car that struggled to compete with the likes of the Toyota Corolla, the Nissan Sentra, and the Honda Civic. Well, Hyundai has turned the Elantra into a true contender that's the best in the industry for the compact sedan segment. In fact, it recently won the 2021 North American Car Of The Year, which is a huge deal. They just teased their upcoming performance-focused version, known as the Elantra N. It looks serious.
The cloaked photo of the car at the end of this article gives you an idea of some of its more aggressive bits, but you can at least see the ferocious trunk spoiler in the lead image, and it looks great coupled with the round exhaust tips and the rear diffuser. Hyundai wants everyone to know that the Elantra N is meant to be driven hard and even tracked.
The front end should have a more aggressive fascia with larger air intakes, a different bumper, and a splitter. The side skirts in the photo also give the N a more performance-minded look, as well as the red trim all around, which we also expect to see inside.
In terms of the powertrain, the Elantra N will get a turbocharged, 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine shared with the Veloster N, good for a potent 275 horsepower and 260 lb-ft of torque. Unfortunately, there's no AWD option for the front-wheel drive only N. But, on the bright side, you can choose between a six-speed manual or an eight-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission. This thing is going to be a hoot.
The Elantra N should get sportier, more heavily bolstered seats to keep you in place when you're nailing those apexes. In terms of tech, expect it to get the Elantra's optional 10.25 digital instrument cluster and matching touchscreen as standard equipment. It will be as well outfitted as the sporty-looking Elantra N Line (above).
The Elantra N will join Hyundai's performance lineup with the Veloster N and the upcoming Kona N. More details are forthcoming about the new performance sedan, including pricing, features, and performance figures. This is exciting news, indeed.
