If you thought the 760 horsepower Ford Mustang Shelby GT500 was astounding, then feast your power-hungry eyes on the new GT500KR ("King of the Road") that gets a supercharged V8 good for a mindboggling 900 horsepower on 93 Octane fuel. This limited-edition model is the most powerful version of the Mustang Shelby series, and it even surpasses the 807-horsepower 2020 Lamborghini Sián FKP 37.

My, those are some big pipes that aren't just for show.

The 2022 GT500KR is, of course, based on the awesome Mustang GT500 but gets a major power boost in the form of a 3.8-liter Whipple supercharger that pumps the 5.2-liter V8's output to over 900 horsepower. Additional modifications include a more powerful intercooler and a high-volume heat exchanger for the supercharger, a cold-air intake, a high-flow Borla exhaust, height-adjustable springs , Ford Performance front and rear sway bars, and recalibrated MagneRide shocks. The GT500KR also gets 20-inch wheels with longer wheel studs.

The GT500KR also benefits from extensive use of carbon fiber composite material for the hood, the front splitter and the rear diffuser. To give you an example of how much of a difference it makes, the hood drops 30 pounds in the process. There's additional downforce, larger intakes, and a special rear spoiler for the KR. In terms of looks, there are stripes above the rocker panels and new emblems on the front and rear fascias. There will be commemorative badges for the 2022 model year, as well. Buyers can also opt to delete the rear seats and replace them with a structural harness bar for racing.

In terms of pricing for the 2022 GT500KR, the base MSRP is $127,895, but customers can provide the donor vehicle themselves and pay an extra $54,995 if the package is added. Regardless of which choice is made, each GT500KR will receive a numbered plaque on the dashboard and in the engine bay. The base price of a 2022 GT500 is $73,465, which makes the additional package added tack on $565 more than if you bought the GT500KR outright.

We're guessing by the time you read this, all 60 units for 2022 will have already been spoken for. It's a very limited production model, but it may sell for at least one more year after 2022. Ford will retrofit GT500s dating back to the 2020 release, and it will build 120 of these for existing customers. 45 additional GT500KRs will be built for the international market. While that might sound great, keep in mind that's only 225 of them globally, making them a true collectors' item.
