5 SUVs with the Most Cargo Space

If you need to haul a ton of stuff, these SUVs have the right stuff

Amos Kwon, Editor-In-Chief

Americans like 'em big. SUVs, that is. Not just for toting family but all the necessary gear for sports, vacation, camping, etc. While there are a ton of SUVs out there, not all of them are created equal when it comes to cargo space. Here are five of the biggest ones that also happen to be remarkable family-friendly SUVs, too.

2022 Ford Expedition MAX

  • PROS: More room than a tiny house, plush interior appointments, easy in-car tech, turbo V6 is surprisingly powerful, drives smaller than it actually is.
  • CONS: Some interior control ergonomics could be improved.

The Ford Expedition is the sole Blue Oval product here. Now that the massive Excursion is no longer made (with a whopping 146 cubic feet of cargo space), the SUV cargo hauling duties fall to the excellent Excursion. Not only is packed with great features like seating for up to 8, the remarkably quick and easy SYNC 4 infotainment system in a 12 or 15.5-inch touchscreen, and Ford Co-Pilot360 driver assist technology, but it also provides a substantial 36 cubic feet behind row three, 79.6 cubes behind row two, and 121.4 cubes of total cargo space.

2022 Chevrolet Suburban

  • PROS: Tremendous amounts of space, V8 and diesel engines are smooth and powerful, smooth infotainment operation, serious towing power.
  • CONS: Some cheap interior bits, 8 and 10-inch infotainment touchscreens are on the small side for such a large vehicle, could use ergonomic improvements.

The Suburban is Chevy's big boy, and there's no mistaking it for anything else. With room for eight and the kind of cargo space that puts everyone else to shame, the Suburban doesn't shy away from hauling duties. It also tows up to 7,800 pounds of heft. Power ranges from 277 in the diesel all the way up to 420 in the 6.2-liter V8. Inside, you'll find a substantial 41.5 cubic feet behind row three, 93.8 cubes behind row two, and a whopping 144.7 cubic feet of total cargo space.

2022 GMC Yukon XL

  • PROS: Just as big as the Suburban inside but with nicer appointments, potent V8 and diesel engines, attractively designed and more premium exterior, excellent tow rating.
  • CONS: A bit too much chrome in some places, higher price point than the Suburban, 8 and 10-inch infotainment touchscreens need to be upsized to 12 and 15.

The Yukon XL is the sibling to the Chevy Suburban, but it's more regal inside. You can still bring eight occupants and a slew of gear, as well. It also tows up to 7,800 pounds and provides 277 horsepower in the diesel and 420 in the 6.2-liter V8. The cargo space matches the Suburban with 41.5 cubic feet behind row three, 93.8 cubes behind row two, and a whopping 144.7 cubic feet of total cargo space.

2022 Chevrolet Tahoe

  • PROS: Drives much better with compact independent rear suspension, tremendous off-road capability in the AT4 trim, large third row, huge towing power, capacious inside.
  • CONS: Goofy-looking front fascia, interior ergonomics make control while driving a challenge, small infotainment screens betray the excellent software.

If you don't need something as big as the Suburban or the Tahoe XL, the Tahoe will do more than fine. It's smaller and easier to drive than either of the two bigger GM siblings, and there's still a fancy cabin. Behind the third-row seat is 25.5 cubic feet of cargo space, which expands to 72.6 cubic feet with row two folded down and 122.9 cubic feet all-in.

2022 GMC Yukon

  • PROS: Great on-road drivability that belies its size, plenty of space in all three rows, three great engine choices that are smooth and powerful, slightly cheaper than the Tahoe.
  • CONS: Polarizing grille and headlight styles, some interior bits seem low rent, two-tone seats are a bit silly looking, small infotainment screens need upsizing.

The Yukon is a GMC product that's actually less expensive than its Chevy sibling, which is surprising. We recommend the mid-grade SLT because it comes with heated/ventilated leather front seats, 20-inch wheels, a power liftgate, and great driver-assistance features. You can also choose between a 5.3- or 6.2-liter V8 engine or a turbo-diesel 3.0-liter inline-six. Behind the third-row seat is 25.5 cubic feet of cargo space, which expands to 72.6 cubic feet with row two folded down and 122.9 cubic feet with the seats folded flat.

How much cargo space is enough?

  • Count on at least 60 cubic feet behind row two if you want room for four adults and all of their gear.
  • 100+ cubic feet of total cargo space is ideal for long trips with luggage and outdoor gear.
  • You can't utilize all the available cargo space if you carry a full load of 5+ passengers, so factor in the need for a roof box when traveling.
