It won't nail the slalom, but it will tote cargo like a boss.

Ever try to fit a plumbing snake, pipe wrenches and spare parts in the trunk of a sedan? As many plumbers will tell you, it's tough. That's why they drive cargo vans. Some businesses can get by without a specialized vehicle. However, if your Toyota Corolla's trunk just can't cut it, it's time to consider upgrading to something with more space in the rear. When Contractors, electricians, delivery drivers and others need a vehicle they can use to haul gear year 'round they turn to cargo vans.

The 2015 Ram ProMaster City Wagon is a van designed for them. More specifically, it's designed for those who need a cargo van that's easy to use in tight city environments. While the ProMaster City Wagon won't woo any driving enthusiasts, it does have the goods to elicit a response from those who build, repair, deliver and generally get things done in urban environments.

  • Expansive windshield and mirrors make for good visibility
  • Surprisingly easy to drive, as well as park
  • Cavernous cargo space for its size
  • Embarrassingly small second row leg room
  • Infotainment screen barely larger than a coaster

  • Exterior: Not your average van

Recently cargo vans have been going through some major redesigns. With lower step-in heights and higher roofs you might think of big old boxy bread trucks, but the 2015 ProMaster City Wagon is much sleeker than that. Robust fender bulges, a creased hood and a small but aggressive grille all make the ProMaster into pretty attractive machine for cargo van. Its boxy body is reminiscent of a Mercedes-Benz Sprinter van, but the ProMaster has a little more attitude.

The Promaster grille features Ram's typical crosshairs and logo, the headlights and taillights are handsomely crafted and the manually-adjusted side mirrors are exactly what you want on a cargo van, without sticking out so far that they could easily be taken off by a passing car. The side of the van is the perfect place for a business logo and phone number.

In short, the ProMaster City Wagon looks exactly like a cargo van should, minus the serial killer ethos.

  • Interior: Spartan but useful

The ProMaster City Wagon isn't exactly exciting on the inside, but it's a vehicle for utility, not excitement. Ours had cloth seats with firm padding. While comfortable, the seats left us wanting more lower back support. In addition to the comfortable-enough seats, the ProMaster's interior featured an almost turkey-drumstick-shaped gear shifter, simple climate controls and radio, a 5-inch touchscreen display and an easy-to-use navigation system.

The great thing about the interior of the ProMaster is all the room up front, which could come in handy for drivers who spend a lot of time in the vehicle. The extra space makes checking off info on a phone, PDA or clipboard easy, and there's lots of storage for important documents or files as well as power sources for smartphones and other devices.

We were mildly surprised by the lack of leg room for the rear seats - also the amount of entry space provided by the sliding door was smaller than expected - but that just meant there was more room for non-human cargo, which is probably more important for potential purchasers of the ProMaster City Wagon.

  • Driving Impressions: Easy to drive, easy to park

Before getting in the ProMaster we thought it'd be tough to see out of and difficult to park, but both of those assumptions proved wrong. The large windshield and windows make it easy to see what's going on around you. While the rear window looks large from the outside, when you're sitting in the driver's seat the window frames of the double doors make it difficult to really see out of the back. However, the side mirrors work well to show what's behind you. The optional rear back-up camera makes parallel parking and backing into tight spaces very easy, although the display could be enlarged. Without the camera, backing in to a tight space or parallel parking may prove difficult.

The 2.4- liter I4, which generates 178 hp and 174 lb-ft of torque, provides adequate acceleration and performance. Steering was surprisingly responsive, and the ProMaster handles typical city street bumps and curves well. Throttle response, while not exceptional, was more than adequate to keep pace with traffic, although the ProMaster does have a tendency to hunt through its nine gear transmission before really gaining speed. The engine is quiet, unless you really step on the gas, and if it weren't for the steering wheel's tendency to vibrate with the engine as it idles, you might forget the ProMaster is running.

  • Final Impressions: The small business workhorse

The 2015 ProMaster City Wagon could be a great vehicle for someone who needs to haul a significant amount of cargo from place to place and occasionally cart some passengers around. Its engine performs well enough for city and highway driving and parking the cargo van is extremely easy as long as you have the optional rear back-up camera.
