Make no mistake. The 2023 GMC Sierra 1500 AT4X is a beast of an off-roader. Plus, it's pretty sweet to look at with that intimidating maw, huge tires, and much-improved cabin. Now, GMC is adding even more off-road goodness to the AT4X with the introduction of the 2023 GMC Sierra 1500 AT4X AEV Edition. There's even more to love thanks to the collaboration of American Expedition Vehicles (AEV), the same outfitter that helped create the awesome Colorado ZR2 Bison.

Need big rock kinda clearance? The AEV Edition has you covered.

The original AT4X truck has a potent 6.2-liter V8 that comes standard with the vehicle, plus front and rear e-lockers and Multimatic DSSV dampers. AEV adds seriously tough front and rear stamped steel bumpers and an impressive five boron steel skid plates that protect the front, steering gear, transfer case, fuel tank, and the rear diff. This means you can go over just about anything the truck can clear without screwing up the tender underbits. The front fascia has also been altered to make room for the winch, which can help you get out of serious situations.

Approach, breakover, and departure angles all improve: 32.5 degrees front, 23.4 breakover, and 23 departure. Even the ground clearance jumps a half-inch to 11.2 when compared to the non-AEV AT4X. That might not seem like much, but it could make the difference between going over an obstacle or not at all. Tires are 33-inch Goodyear Wrangler Territory MT tires that are shod on 18-inch AEV Salta wheels that include a recessed valve for protection. The wheel and tire combo looks pretty aggressive and doubly badass.

AEV didn't touch the motor, and the AT4X AEV Edition spews out a still healthy 420 horsepower and 460 lb-ft of torque. The presence of the V8 means it feels very much like a traditional pickup truck when compared to V6 turbo Ford models, which are still plenty powerful but feel (and sound) very different. Look for the 2023 GMC Sierra 1500 AT4X AEV Edition to go on sale in 2023 at a yet undisclosed price. It will certainly be more than the current AT4X's $76,500.
