The problem with cars these days is there are so many gizmos and doo-dads in them a body could spend the better part of a midmorning trying to roll down the window. If I had my druthers, I'd open my windows with a crank, and as for locking the door, I think I can manage to push down a very small knob, thank you very much.
But Delores says she wants a car that's safe, and you know how it is with women; sometimes it's best to nod your head and avoid a squabble, so we went ahead and got a Lexus ES 350. Now, I don't know about you, but I can't help but wish that cars had names instead of these numbers and letters that make you feel like you're in line at the butcher's rather than shelling out king's ransom for a jalopy.
Well, wouldn't you know that after a few weeks of taking the ES to and from the pharmacy, I've really grown to like her. Sure, it's got all the modern bells and whistles that, if you ask me, are just more things that are gonna break down eventually, but I don't believe I've ever dreamed that driving a car could feel so much like sitting in my chair.
Best part is, when I turn the car off, it pulls my seat all the way back to give me plenty of room to get out. Same thing when you get in. It's really something. I don't know why all cars don't do this. It should be a law or something. The number of times I thought I'd thrown my back out getting in and out of that damn Buick, you'd expect my chiropractor would give me two weeks in his shore house by way of a thank you for all the business.
This Lexus has a nice little V6 in it, and it's got some get-up-and-go if you're the type who likes to take his life into his own hands. Me, I figure 40 miles is far enough to go in an hour. Why is everyone in such a darn hurry?
Well, it's gone past 9:30 a.m. and if there's one thing I've learned it's that my mid-morning nap isn't going to take itself. I at least have to meet it halfway and recline in my chair just a bit ... there we go.
